Researchers have confirmed a fast-track manufacturing method for chimeric antigen receptors or CAR T-cells for immunotherapy within just 24 hours. This is a joint effort by the research team at University Hospitals (UH) Seidman Cancer Center and a biotech start-up company.

The group is among the first in the country to test this production strategy. For hematologists, oncologists, and their patients, this breakthrough promise to hasten the delivery of CAR T -therapy to those who need the most is very heartwarming.

According to some research, 25% of cancer patients who are scheduled to undergo CAR T therapy have illness progression before they can be treated, and many of them must wait more than three weeks for the delivery of a commercial CAR T product. The benefits of this ground-breaking therapy are now available to patients in need thanks to a novel manufacturing method developed here.

Phase 1 clinical trial of the rapid manufacturing of CAR T-cell product is expected to begin this November. Adult patients with relapsed or resistant non-Hodgkin lymphoma will participate in the trial to evaluate the efficacy of so-called UF-KURE19 cells.

Experts are working hard to make the manufacturing process straightforward and affordable so that hospitals around the world without sophisticated equipment can use it.
